2014 was another amazing year in sports. There were record breaking individual performances, outstanding team performances, and some all-time great athletes retired on top.
January – The Florida State Seminoles defeat the Auburn Tigers 34-31 to win the BCS National Championship game. Quarterback Jameis Winston throws a 2 yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin with just 13 seconds remaining to secure the Seminoles’ 3rd National Championship
The Indianapolis Colts rally from a 38-10 3rd quarter deficit to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 45-44 in the Wildcard round of the NFL Playoffs. It was the 2nd biggest comeback in NFL Playoff history.
February – The Seattle Seahawks defeat the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII. With 10 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown, linebacker Malcolm Smith is named Super Bowl MVP.
Dale Earnhardt Jr wins the Daytona 500
March – Carmelo Anthony scores 62 points against the Charlotte Bobcats and sets the Madison Square Garden scoring record.
April – The UCONN Huskies Men’s basketball team defeats the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 to win the National Championship. The next night, the UCONN Women’s Basketball team wins the National Championship by defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 79-58. The victory capped off their 40-0 season, and it was their ninth National Championship
May – new NBA commissioner Adam Silver gives a lifetime ban to Clippers owner Donald Sterling following Sterling’s racist comments that were recorded.
With the 249th pick in the NFL draft, the St Louis Rams draft Michael Sam. Sam becomes the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL.
California Chrome wins the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
June – The Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers 4 games to 1 and win the Stanley Cup. Justin Williams wins the Conn Smythe trophy
The San Antonio Spurs defeat the Miami heat 4 games to 1 to win their 5th NBA Championship. Forward Kawhi Leonard is named Finals MVP.
July – With their 1-0 win over Argentina, Germany wins its 4th World Cup title
LeBron James announces that he’s coming back to the Cleveland Cavaliers after playing with the Miami Heat for the past four seasons.
August – Mo’ne Davis becomes the first girl to pitch a winning game in the Little League World Series. She was also the first girl to pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series as the Taney Dragons defeated Nashville 4-0.
September – Ray Rice is released by the Baltimore Ravens and then suspended indefinitely by the NFL after footage of him striking his then fiancée Janay Palmer. A week later Adrian Peterson is suspend by the Minnesota Vikings for domestic abuse against his 4 year old son.
Serena Williams wins her 3rd consecutive US Open as she defeats Caroline Wozniacki. It’s Williams 18th singles Grand Slam title.
In his final at bat at Yankees Stadium, Derek Jeter hits a game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning in the Yankees 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
October – In the Denver Broncos 42-17 win over the San Francisco, Peyton Manning throws 4 touchdowns and in the process breaks Brett Favre’s all time touchdown mark of 508.
The San Francisco Giants defeat the Kansas City Royals in seven games to win their 3rd World Series title in the last 5 years. Madison Bumgarner, who had arguably the greatest pitching performance in World Series history, is named MVP
November – Manny Pacquiao knocks down Chris Algieri six times in route to a unanimous decision victory in their WBO welterweight title fight.
Quarterback Ben Rothlisberger throws six touchdowns passes in the Pittsburgh Steelers 43-23 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. It was Rothlisberger’s second game in a row throwing for six touchdowns passes which has never been done before in the NFL
December – The College Football Committee announces that Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State will be the four participants in the first ever college football playoff.
Former WWE superstar CM Punk announces that he’s signing with UFC
The LA Galaxy wins the MLS Championship as they defeated the New England Revolution. It would be Landon Donovan’s last game. Donovan retires as the United States all-time leader in goals and assist.
