Yesterday against the Rams, Beckham put on another spectacular performance catching eight passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants 37-27 victory over the Rams. With his performance yesterday, Beckham set the Giants rookie receiving record for touchdowns and receiving yards.
For the season, Beckham has 79 receptions for 1,120 yards and 11 touchdowns. What makes these numbers even more impressive is that Beckham missed the first four games of the season because of a hamstring injury. If you average what Beckham has done in 11 games, and factor in if he had played in all 15 of the Giants games this season, he would have 107 receptions, 1524 yards and 15 touchdowns. That would put him 2nd in the NLF in receptions, third in yards and first in touchdown receptions.
A case can be made that had Beckham played the entire season he would be considered as an offensive MVP candidate in addition to the Rookie of the Year award which he should win easily.
While other rookies have had successes this season, none have exceled the way Beckham has. Since his incredible one handed touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on November 23rd, few if any NFL player has garnered the attention Beckham has. Fans come to games early now to see Beckham display his amazing one handed catching ability during pre-game warmups.
Sometimes success can lead to contentment, but that is not the case with Beckham. He continues to strive to get better and has already sought out to the likes of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Jerry Rice to find out what it takes to be great. It is this mindset which is why Beckham is seen as one of the team’s leaders and will get consideration to be one of the Giants team captains for next season.
With one more game left in the season, Beckham will try to have his ninth consecutive game with at least 90 receiving yards. While the Giants had hoped the 2014 season had not turned out the way it did, they can take satisfaction that their first round pick has produced more than what they could have imagined in his rookie year.
There is no doubt that the Giants future is bright with Odell Beckham Jr., as he is on pace to becoming a legendary Giant.
