In a game they needed to avoid a sweep, the Yankees got their first shut out of the season as they defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-0.
“You always want to avoid a sweep and finish a series well,” Sabathia said. “It felt good to get a win.”
CC Sabathia pitched seven strong innings striking out four, and only giving up four hits on 114 pitches. When the Tigers did make solid contact against CC, the Yankees fielders were solid in robbing Tigers hitters of base hits. After CC left the game after the 7th inning, David Roberson and Mariano Rivera would close out the game in the 8th and 9th inning striking out 3 Tigers hitters.
The Yankees would take control of the game in the 2nd inning as they roughed up the Tigers ace Justin Verlander. Francisco Cervelli hit a double to left center that drove in Ichiro. Two batters later Jayson Nix hit a two run homerun to left field.
The Yankees would score twice in the 8th and 9th inning to preserve the win. The win helped the Yankees prevent their worst start to a season since 1989 when they began the year 1-7.
The Yankees will now travel to Cleveland to begin a four game series against the Indians that starts on Monday. Hiroki Kuroda will start for the Yankees and Ubaldo Jimenez will start for the Indians
