Civil Service: The Sanitation worker exam is not yet scheduled, but tests for many other jobs are ready

There is still no news on the upcoming Sanitation worker exam but the city is currently offering more than a dozen other tests for civil service jobs this month.

Caseworker, child protection specialist, correction officer and eligibility specialist are some of the titles open this month along with police officer, school safety agent and motor vehicle operators.

Those tests — and more — are being given at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) computerized testing centers.

Applicants for certain exams are able to walk in, fill out a form, pay a fee and take the test.

For many people, that’s a vast improvement over the old system of filing an application and then waiting to find out where the test will be given.

Be prepared. Seats at the computerized testing centers fill up. DCAS officials suggests applicants look for dates earlier in the month, since there is usually more space.

There is only a short time left to file applications for several other city jobs including auto body worker, clerical associate and custodian engineer.

For details on qualifications and salary, visit the DCAS website: www.nyc.gov/dcas and click on the “Work for the City” tab.

The much-anticipated test for sanitation worker will almost certainly be given at some point this year, since the current list expires in early 2014. Despite several reports that the applications were available, the city has not yet opened filing.
