Friends, we celebrate today the birth of W.E.B. Du Bois, a spiritual and intellectual giant.
As a Black man, as an American and as a citizen of the world, his contributions have enriched countless lives; and they fall into three distinct categories: the first, as a vibrant cultural creator; the second, as an outstandingly effective political leader; and the third, as a visionary role model.
As a scholar and author, Du Bois was eloquent, articulate and persuasive.
As a political leader, he opened opportunities for vast numbers of people.
As a role model, he inspired and inculcated vision and purpose to the lives of his adoring followers.
Few individuals have left such an imprint on their times.
The prominent Du Bois volumes – “The Souls of Black Folks”, “The Philadelphia Negro” and “The Study of Negro Politics” – were among the most significant writings ever created by a Black American.
As a political leader and as a founder of the NAACP, as founder and editor of the influential journal “The Crisis”, and through his important activities with the United Nations, W. E. B. Du Bois was an internationally recognized figure.
As a role model, his example and achievements inspired, energized and galvanized the aspirations and efforts of huge numbers.
We are delighted that the homestead, the personal papers, and the extensive personal library of this titanic figure will be permanently preserved, with access to his devoted admirers, here in the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum in Accra.
Happy Birthday, W. E. B. Du Bois!
