Lindy Hop dancers performing in Harlem

Afro Jazz Connection Traces the Lindy Hop’s Roots at Harlem Hospital, Nov. 14

From The Harlem Times Culture Desk.

Dancers and jazz lovers have a free date on the calendar. Afro Jazz Connection, a live dance program celebrating what organizers call the “Afroroots of jazz,” comes to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem on Saturday, November 14, at 12 noon.

According to invitations sent by Voza Rivers and New Heritage Theatre Group, African dance and Lindy Hop educator Paté Nassalang will trace the origins of the Lindy Hop, which the organizers call the neighborhood’s signature cultural dance. The program promises film clips, a dance demonstration and a dance social, so come ready to move.

The afternoon opens with an interactive tour of the harlem is . . . Music, Theater & Dance exhibit at the hospital, according to the invitation. Afro Jazz Connection is a public art and education program of Community Works NYC.

Admission is free, but organizers say seating is limited and ask guests to RSVP in advance.

Why it matters: Swing dancing is part of uptown’s cultural inheritance. A free program that ties the Lindy Hop back to its African roots, held in a public hospital that serves the community every day, puts that history within reach of families, elders and young New Yorkers alike.
