Dignity

Dignity is very important for any human being. To have dignity is to have protection, self-sufficiency, and reserves. One of the ways to acquire dignity is to look inwards into the true self. It starts with examining one’s emotions. The emotions are known to affect the quality of thoughts, and thoughts are known to predict our actions.
People who act without dignity tend to display thoughtless actions. Some of the thoughts that precede these actions are “I am not good enough;” “I am worthless;” or ” I am a nobody.” These thoughts have underlying negative emotions behind them such as the feeling of worthlessness.
One important way to preserve dignity is to become aware of one’s emotions. Negative emotions such as anger, frustration, jealousy, hatred, and wickedness are some of the emotions that lead to thoughtless acts that can rob us of our dignity. On the other hand, happiness, joy, and peace are some of the positive emotions that lead to the right thoughts that keep us focused on our goals and help us preserve human dignity. A dignified human acts rationally and thoughtfully, even in the most challenging situations.
For example, suicide is a thoughtless act that suggests cowardice rather than dignity.
An affordable way to improve one’s dignity is through Voluntarily Regulated Breathing Practices (VRPBs). VRPBs such as Coherent Breathing can rapidly induce a state of calm alertness, alleviate depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anger, and aggression, and improve attention, emotion regulation, and cognitive function (Brown and Gerbarg, 2012). By stimulating the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system and by balancing the stress response systems, VRBPs also activate the healing, anti-inflammatory, and energy restorative systems of the body (Brown, Gerbarg, and Muench 2013).
Healing breath practices that are augmented with physical activity such as postural movements or dance yield the best results. These activities allow individuals to acquire and maintain positive emotions such as love, happiness, and peace which lead to acts of dignity.
A dignified person is important in the community because they have some reserve that can be called upon in challenging times.
